ISO container size and type codes
The size and type code is a 4-character code on a shipping container under the container number which provides detailed information about the container’s dimensions and specific characteristics.
The first two characters denote the size (length and height), and the last two characters denote the type (type and subtype).
Size Code (First Two Characters)
- Length(First Character)
– 1 for 10 feet
– 2 for 20 feet
– 3 for 30 feet
– 4 for 40 feet
– 5 for 45 feet
– 6 for 48 feet
– 7 for 53 feet
- Height and Width (Second Character)
– 0 for Not specified
– 2 for Standard height (8 feet 6 inches)
– 4 for High cube (9 feet 6 inches)
– 5 for Extra height (10 feet 6 inches)
– 6 for Over-height (9 feet 6 inches)
– 8 for Extra width (2.5 meters)
Type Code (Last Two Characters)
- Primary Purpose (Third Character)
– G for General purpose
– R for Reefer (refrigerated)
– U for Open top
– H for Hardtop
– P for Platform (flat rack, bolster)
– T for Tank
– B for Bulk
- Secondary Characteristics (Fourth Character)
– 0 for Standard container with no special features.
– 1 for End doors, allowing access from both ends.
– 2 for Side doors, providing access from the sides.
– 3 for Insulated, for temperature-sensitive cargo.
– 4 for Ventilated, allowing airflow for ventilation.
